VICTOR C. DETEC

AUSTINTOWN – There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Maron Church in Youngstown for Victor C. Detec, 57, who passed away unexpectedly Tuesday at his residence. Victor will always be remembered and loved by his family and friends.

He was born Nov. 23, 1948 in Youngstown, the son of Philip J. Sr. and Mary (Abraham) Detec.

Victor was a renowned executive chef for various hotels and country clubs in Florida. He then was owner and operator of Victor’s Backstreet Cuisine in New Smyrna, Fla., for 15 years. Victor had won countless awards for his cooking capability but most impressively, he was co-champion of the state soup contest. He was an accomplished and award-winning ice sculptor and appeared in Easy Rider Magazine for sculpting a 50th Anniversary Harley Davidson.

Victor will always remain in the hearts of many, but especially the homeless for opening his restaurant on his days off to feed them. After the hurricanes, he moved back to Youngstown to spend time with his family and was working for a new business venture, Rosetta Stone Café in downtown Youngstown.

He was a 1966 graduate of Ursuline High School and attended The Ohio State University, majoring in art. He enjoyed martial arts and fishing. Victor was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He leaves behind to hold on to his memories his wife, the former Pat Smith, whom he married Nov. 1, 1987; a daughter, Kirsten (Tim) Maher of Rhode Island; two stepsons, Chad and Neil Hoffmaster, both of Florida; two stepdaughters, Carrie and Melissa Hoffmaster, both of Florida; two step grandchildren, Justin Watson and Abrey Hoffmaster; two brothers, Phillip J. Jr. (Ann) Detec of Boardman and Atty. David (Beth) Detec of Liberty; two sisters, Mary Ann (Keith) Lemke of Austintown and Susan (Denise) Garcia of Youngstown; 14 nieces and nephews; and three great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Arrangements entrusted to the professional and sympathetic care of Rossi Bros. Funeral Home, Boardman Chapel.
