EDWARD NEMETH

BOARDMAN - Edward Nemeth, 62, died Wednesday evening at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House. Ed was born Feb. 21, 1948, in Youngstown, a son of the late Emil and Eleanor Carney Nemeth.

A lifelong area resident, Ed was a 1966 graduate of Ursuline High School and received his Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Youngstown State University in 1976. He was three term Sheriff for Mahoning County. His career began as a security guard at Wilkoff Steel in Youngstown, and in 1970, he became a deputy sheriff. When he was a lieutenant with the Sheriff Department, he was one of the founding members of organizing the F.O. P. Lodge No. 141 and served as president. Ed left the Valley in 1979 to pursue a career as a loss-prevention supervisor for General Motors in Oklahoma.

In 1980, he returned to the Mahoning Valley, where he was employed as risk manager for Schwebel Baking Company. Ed was elected and served three terms as Mahoning County Sheriff beginning in 1985 through 1996. During his tenure, two new jails were built by the combined effort of three local architects. The first in 1994, the minimum-security jail on Commerce Street and the second in 1996, the County Justice Center on Fifth Avenue. He instituted the promotional testing process within the department and the Mounted Patrol of which he was a member. Ed negotiated the first labor contract for the department’s employees and brought the Sheriff Department from 65 employees to 265 employees.

Ed loved the Mahoning Valley and his goal was to revive the film industry in the area. He spent the last three years producing and directing a genre picture in Youngstown with his daughter that used predominantly local talent from the Valley. The movie will be completed soon. Among numerous memberships, Ed was a member of the Buckeye State Sheriff Association, F.O.P. Lodge No. 141, Crime Clinic of Greater Youngstown, a charter member of the Law Enforcement Honor Society within the Criminal Justice Department at Youngstown State University, Mahoning Valley Chiefs of Police Association, Ancient Order of Hibernians, a member of the Alumni Association of YSU, and Leadership Youngstown. He received many honors including Buckeye Elks, and the Youngstown Area Jaycees’ Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

He leaves his wife, the former Mary (Peggy) Zeck, whom he married April 12, 1969; two daughters, Heidi Nemeth Moss and son-in-law, David Moss of Canfield and Heather Nemeth, at home; three sisters, Patricia Nemeth of Poland, Margaret McCarthy of Austintown, and Kathleen Romeo of Poland.

Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown.
