Thomas Edward Carney, known as Tom, passed away on November 26, 2023, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 74. He was born on December 10, 1948, in Youngstown, Ohio, to George and Norene Carney.

Tom was a lover of life-long learning and had an impressive educational background. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Youngstown State University, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toledo College of Law, and a PhD from West Virginia University.

Tom's career was dedicated to academia, and he served as an Associate Professor Emeritus at the University of Baltimore. He was a published author, with one of his notable works being "Barack Obama, the Fulfillment of an American Dream."

In his personal life, Tom was married to the love of his life, Melissa (Missy). They enjoyed their life in Locust Point - home of the Star-Spangled Banner. Their beloved beagle, Stanley bought joy to them. Tom and Melissa shared a passion for travel, with a memorable trip to Ireland.  He enjoyed fly fishing. He also had a deep appreciation for the arts, particularly the works of Gustave Klimt. Tom was an avid foodie.

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Melissa Anne Martin, and his siblings: George (Cheryl) Carney, Kathleen (Kenneth) Sinclair, William Carney, David (Debby) Carney, Joanne (Edward) Carney-Smith, James (Eleanor Martindale) Carney and in-laws Colleen Martin-Lauer and Mark Lauer.  He was loved by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Carney, and his parents, George and Norene Carney.

A viewing will be held at Rucks Funeral Home, located at 1050 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21204, on Sunday, December 3, 2023, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. 

A Mass in Tom's honor will take place at St. Ignatius Church, located at 740 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202, on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 10:00 am.  Interment to be private.

I remember Tom from St. Rose and Ursuline.  We met a few times for breakfast while attending YSU.
