Joseph M. Costello
GIRARD - Joseph M. Costello, 78, passed away Monday afternoon, June 29, 2026, at Select Specialty Hospital in Boardman, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family, following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.
Joseph was born Feb. 27, 1948, in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph and Eleanor (Cain) Costello, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a 1966 graduate of Ursuline High School and proudly served in the United States Air Force. Joe was known as the “Ice Man” while operating his own refrigeration business. He then worked at Trumbull Correctional Institution doing heating and cooling, until retiring in 2014.
Joe was a member of St. Rose Church. He was also a skilled dart player who belonged to numerous teams in the Youngstown Dart Association, including the Dart Busters, where he played alongside his daughter Chelsea and son Joe. He was a member of the American Legion Post 235, where he enjoyed spending time with fellow veterans. He was also a member of the Cleveland Bonsai Club and was an avid fan of Cleveland sports teams. Joe enjoyed cars, racing, and looked forward to going to the Indianapolis 500 each year with family. He was exceptionally handy and could fix just about anything. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Joe leaves to forever cherish his memory his wife of nearly 41 years, Beth Breese Costello, whom he married Aug. 2, 1985; his son, Joseph (Stephanie) Costello of Canfield; his daughters, Kaley Costello (Sean Karamanyan) of Whidbey Island, Wash. and Chelsea Costello (John Conrad) of McDonald; six grandchildren, Joey, Ellie, Sammy, Emmy, Ryan and Tigran; his brother, Bill (Janet) Costello of Mansfield; his sister-in-law, Jackie Breese of Girard; his brother-in-law, Richard Breese of Boardman; his nephew, Dylan Breese, whom he raised like a son; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Joe will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Maryann (Al) Schulz.
Private services were held for the family at Kinnick Funeral Home in Girard. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held in September for family and friends.
