Louis ‘Lou’ A. Chiaro Formerly of Ellwood City A service will be held on Saturday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church for Louis A. Chiaro, 90, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Boardman and New Middletown, Ohio, who passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2018, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Chiaro was born April 7, 1928, in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Michael and Philomena Sainato Chiaro.

He taught history and government at Ursuline High School from 1954 to 1994 where he also coached football, track and was athletic director. While at Ursuline, he was responsible for adding boys’ baseball as an extracurricular sport and was an important part of laying the groundwork for the girls’ sports program. In 1985, he was inducted into the Ursuline High School All Sports Hall of Fame.

A 1946 graduate of Lincoln High School in Ellwood City, he went on to play semi-professional football for the Ellwood City Bolt Busters. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Youngstown State University where he was a standout lineman playing guard under Dwight “Dike” Beede.

Mr. Chiaro is survived by his wife, Alice Smith Chiaro, whom he married September 21, 1957; a daughter, Cynthia M. Chiaro (John Vujcec) of Cincinnati, Ohio; two sons, Louis M. Chiaro (Leeann) and Christopher W. Chiaro (Trish); grandchildren, Evan and Aidan Vujcec, Lyndzie and Stephanie Chiaro, and Ella and Avery Chiaro; and a brother, Michael Chiaro of Koppel, Pa. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Rocco Chiaro; and sisters, Dora Lagana, Rose Contestabile, Teresa Jeannette, Jean Damato, Yolanda Blaskowitz.

Friends may call beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

A great teacher, coach, and more importantly a great man. RIP Mr.Chiaro. He was the reason why I returned to coach baseball after I gave it up in 1980. Thank you Mr. Chiaro.

Coach Chiaro was a great coach and mentor ! I and many others in football and track were made better players and men ! Thank you Coach rest in peace and God Bless  ! Tony Galose UHS class of66 🙏

Rest in peace Mr Chiaro 🙏 . I had him as a teacher for Civics class . I remember him as being easy to talk to and fair with us. Class of 66 , Patty Myers
