In Memory

Joseph Hudak

Joseph A. Hudak

January 16, 2024

Joseph A. Hudak, Joe, passed away in his sister’s home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. He was surrounded by his daughters as he transitioned from his life here on earth, to the life he was promised by his heavenly Father.

Joe was born in Youngstown, Ohio on June 10, 1947 to Joseph J. Hudak and Elizabeth M. Slanina Hudak. He grew up on the east side of Youngstown where he has very strong roots from both sides of his family.

Joe worked for Sparkle Market while attending classes. He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1966.

Joe joined the Navy and was in active duty and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Once returning home he began working for Commercial Shearing & Stamping. Then became a deputy for the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department for several years. After resigning, Joe drove a commercial truck for Falcon Transportation, then retired early due to various health conditions.

Joe was a very loving father and leaves his four daughters, Christy Hudak, Carrie Hudak, Nicole Hudak and Alison Hudak Bingham (William), who will miss him tremendously. He has nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Joe also leaves behind three sisters, Anne Huda, Loretta Neill (Bill) and Rebecca Hudak and his brother, William Hudak.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth and his brother. John.

Over the years Joe has enjoyed outdoor activities. He went on hunting trips with his brother, Billy and friends, fishing trips and had some family camping adventures. Later in his life Joe spent time watching the birds and the squirrels, along with some of the other critters that would make their presence known when he sipped his coffee sitting outside mornings and evenings. At home, in the kitchen, Joe took pride in preparing some of his family’s favorite recipes. He also spent time baking pies and cookies for the holidays. He loved a good cup of coffee on any given day. In the garage Joe was known to spend time under the hood of his Classic 1969 Dodge Coronet 440 rebuilding the motor to enhance the performance of his muscle car. Occasionally taking it to the road for a fast and loud ride.

He enjoyed volunteering at the festivals and other events that take place in the downtown Youngstown area. A couple of his favorites were the Slovak Fest and First Night Out. Joe always dedicated time to volunteer at special events organized and held by the Veteran’s Administration.

He was a good friend and brother, a very loving father who treasured whatever time was able to share with his daughters and grandchildren.

Joe was someone who remained positive and never gave up during the tough times in life. He believed in being a gentleman and would gladly open the door for a lady whenever he had the opportunity. He valued the little things in everyday life and didn’t take a single day for granted. He will be remembered for these unique characteristics by all who knew and loved him. His love will continue to shine through his daughters and grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice of the Valley for the services provided to Joe and his family during his final days. The compassion, care and genuine concern conveyed to all of us by every member of the staff who we interacted with was absolutely appreciated. We couldn’t have experienced a more comforting atmosphere throughout our father’s last days. Our hearts were touched by each of you. Thank you from all of us.

A service will be held to honor Joe and celebrate his life at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Parish, 77 East Lucius Avenue, Youngstown, OH  44507 on Thursday, February 8, 2024. Greeting will start at 9:15 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a meal to follow.

I had a paper route on the East side in dangerous neighborhood, Joe' house was on my route. I remember Joe as being fearless, he was afraid of nothing. I pray that he is safely and happily in the arms of Jesus.
